In class we had a screening of Searching for Sugarman (2012) By Malik Bandjello. This is a documentary film which explores the 'disappearance' of a mystical singer-songwriter Sixto Rodriguez. From the outset it became apparent that this film had a unique way of story telling. The first part of the documentary really set up the enigma of the subject and the mystery that surrounds him for example the many theories that the had committed suicide on stage or setting himself afire, The outset of the documentary really set up the enigma, the interviews with people talking about what they knew about the singer really enforced the enigma and this mixed with the gripping visuals of Detroit really helped to set the scene for this mystical documentary. I really enjoyed this documentary and it gave me an idea of how events and interviews can be arranged and manipulated in order to create a specific atmosphere. I particular loved the long tracking shots of Sixto walking along the roadside in Detroit and of course the soundtrack was also terrific. This was a very inspiring documentary.
